I spotted a difference between the Portuguese translation and the original album (and all the other translations I have seen so far).
The brandname of the servicestation isn't Essāo but Proto Galp in the Portuguese album

Re: Proto Galp vs. Essāo
So is this only the second time that the drawings have been adapted in a translation (with exception of mirroring the pages for right-to-left langauges)? Funny that in both cases it concerns puns on modern petrol stations brands. In "Asterix in Switzerland" Antar was replaced by Michelin, now it is Esso being replaced by Galp. For the written jokes, it is a quite usual procedure to replace references that might not be understood by the target audience. In the current story it is Nelly Furtado substituting Vasco de Gama. This is easy, as you have to replace the text anyway during a translation. But for the drawings this is way more complex. You need an artist for the modification of the picture and of course there are licenses that have to be considered.
I personally don't approve these changes. Does it really hurt if you don't get all the background jokes? Isn't Asterix known for the pleasure of discovering new references that you have overlooked for years? How much can be changed in the pictures? That would be worth a detailed discussion in a different section of this forum.

I think that in this age of digital drawings it has become easier. Back when it was all done by hand it required a redrawing probably.
